So this was a fun method to get into, as I have zero experience w/screencasting. However because my computer has "no audio" device installed I was unable to totally complete the screencast. I used Screenr which was mostly easy to use (signed in with my LinkedIn account) and I just grabbed a quick shot so I could have something to "turn in" for this assignment. My screencast is called "My favorite Podcasts" and if I had audio I'd be describing why I like these Podcasts the most.
I wish I knew how to get an audio device but the TechSoup article was not up and the ScreenJelly link btw did not work. Screenr doesn't seem to have a FAQ anywhere that will help you out. None of the other articles described how to get an audio device. Do I have to go buy a USB microphone or something? Sometimes the most obvious things are not that obvious to others, people!
Hi Adela, regarding audio devices for screencasting, you can use either a headset/microphone made for computers (look for one with noise-cancelling technology if possible) or a USB desktop microphone. You don't have to go for the high-end ones, either. In fact, here at TSLAC we have mainly stuck to the cheaper models that tend to run between $10-$20 for either a headset/microphone combo or a desktop microphone. Logitech and Labtec are both good brands, but I'd recommend reading reviews (Amazon is great for reviews) before making any purchase. Alot of newer microphones are coming out in only a USB version, so be aware of that if you are limited on USB ports on your computer. Supposedly USB microphones offer better audio quality than the kind that connect to a headset and microphone port on your computer, but I personally haven't been able to tell a difference. I hope that information helps and sorry for not pointing that out in this Method. (And while it is true that you MIGHT be able to get away with using a built-in microphone on your computer - if your computer has one - the audio quality is usually not that good so we don't recommend that option.) Thanks so much, Naomi
ReplyDeleteThanks, it seemed to be just assumed that everyone's computer would have an audio device automatically installed or something and as I stated, I don't have such a thing at my work computer. And I don't have a home computer or home internet either. Thanks for the info!
